Draft India Data Accessibility & Use Policy 2022

Published on 21 February 2022, this proposed policy aims to allow the government to license and sell public data to the private sector. It notes that “the private sector may be granted access to select databases for commercial use…..Given that the private sector has the potential to reap massive dividends from this data, it is only fair to charge them for its use.” The clause on the commercialization of public data has received criticism, especially since India does not have a data protection law that provides accountability in cases of privacy violations.
