The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) released the draft National Data Governance Framework Policy (NDGFP) in May 2022. This policy seeks to foster an ecosystem for AI and data-driven research and startups in India by establishing and enabling access to an extensive repository of datasets. It also aims to deliver better and more responsive governance to citizens, particularly in critical social sectors, by adopting a data-driven approach to governance. Key elements of the policy include setting up the India Data Management Office (IDMO) under MeitY and the Digital India Corporation, developing a repository of Indian datasets and providing request-based access to these datasets, and encouraging the private sector to contribute non-personal and anonymized data. The NDGFP, along with the IDMO and datasets programme, has been integrated under the INDIAai central programme, but has not yet been implemented.
